Editor’s Note: Milestones and Modernization
Good morning to our readers across the Red River North, Eastline, and Boreal Boundary. As we reach the final days of February 2026, the pulse of our region is quickening with historical firsts and a careful eye toward the horizon. Whether it is a fundamental shift in how we handle medical emergencies or the first official look at the spring melt, the common thread this week is progress paired with vigilance.
In the Red River North, the focus is on the water and the future of our infrastructure. Manitoba Transportation and Infrastructure’s first 2026 spring flood outlook has brought a sigh of relief with a "low to moderate" risk assessment, thanks to shallower frost depths. Meanwhile, our municipalities are deep in fiscal planning; West St. Paul has announced its 2026 Financial Plan hearing for March 17, giving residents a first look at the capital projects that will shape the coming year. We are also seeing a strong push for community wellness and safety, from East St. Paul’s new firefighter remuneration by-law to St. Andrews’ "Communities in Bloom" participation and the popular free ski library event at Larters this weekend.
Moving to the Eastline, Niverville is making history. As of March 1, Niverville Fire & EMS will be the first in Manitoba to launch the new Advanced First Aid (AFA) model. By adopting this innovative framework, Chief Keith Bueckert has effectively doubled the town's medical response capacity—ensuring that when a 911 call goes out, a qualified responder is available to answer. Meanwhile, in the RM of Taché, a difficult week on the picket lines has highlighted the tension between municipal labor and public service, reminding us all of the vital work required to keep our roads safe and our landfills operating.
In the Boreal Boundary, the narrative is one of administrative change and community resilience. The RM of Alexander is navigating a significant transition with concurrent vacancies for its CAO and Public Works Manager, while Mayor Jack Brisco has bravely highlighted the growing need for safety protocols to protect our local officials from rising intimidation. On a lighter note, the region is buzzing with winter energy; the 18th Annual Lac du Bonnet Ice Fishing Derby hits the Winnipeg River this Saturday with a $15,000 prize on the line, and Beausejour is celebrating its local trails as "Snowmobile Month" officially takes flight. From dredging the Wood Duck Boat Launch to the reopening of the Great Falls bulk water station, the work of building a better region continues in every corner.

Manitoba Provincial Flood Outlook: Low to Moderate Risk:
