Editor’s Note: Community Resilience and Regional Growth
Good morning to our readers across the Red River North, Eastline, and Boreal Boundary. As we move through the second week of February 2026, our communities are finding themselves at a crossroads between long-term vision and immediate resilience. From the signing of historic infrastructure deals to the bravery of our local first responders, this week’s news highlights a region that is growing rapidly while looking out for its own.
In Red River North, public safety has taken center stage. The Selkirk RCMP are currently investigating a series of three robberies along Main Street, and we urge residents to remain vigilant and report any information that might assist in identifying the suspect. On the river, the landscape is changing as of February 11, with ice-breaking operations officially underway. If you are a snowmobiler or ice fisher, please heed the warnings from the RM of St. Andrews and stay clear of the stretch between Selkirk and Netley Marsh; the ice is now hazardous and unpredictable.
Moving to the Eastline, the scale of our regional growth is being met with massive investment. A monumental $205-million contract was signed this month for a regional wastewater treatment plant near Niverville—a project that will essentially allow communities in Hanover and surrounding areas to double in size. We are also seeing progress in healthcare, as the Bethesda Regional Health Centre enters its final stages of equipment installation for its new dialysis and chemotherapy wings. However, growth comes with the need for strict oversight; following the January propane explosion in Ste. Genevieve, Workplace Safety and Health has issued stop-work orders to ensure the future safety of local workers. Additionally, the Town of Ste. Anne has released its Annexation Report, a clear signal that our urban boundaries are preparing for the next generation of residents.
In the Boreal Boundary, the strength of our "good neighbour" spirit was on full display this past weekend. In Beausejour, a devastating fire on Park Avenue saw departments from across the region—including East Selkirk, Springfield, and Lac du Bonnet—work through the night to support local crews, with Mayor Ray Schirle even stepping in to help shuttle families. As the Red Cross assists those displaced, we are reminded of how tightly knit our communities truly are. There is also a sense of forward momentum elsewhere, as the Municipality of Alexander rescinded the Great Falls Boil Water Advisory on February 9, and the Winnipeg River Planning District officially adopted its new Development Plan. This new by-law will be the "roadmap" for all future growth in the district, ensuring that our development is as smart as it is fast.

Selkirk RCMP Investigate Main Street Robbery Spree:
RCMP are seeking the public's assistance after a series of three robberies targeted Main Street businesses this month. Two of the incidents occurred at the same location in the 200-block of Main Street on February 4 and 7, followed by a third robbery in the 300-block just before midnight on February 7. In each case, the suspect fled on foot with cash and cigarettes. Police believe a single individual—described as six feet tall with a slim build—may be responsible for all three crimes. Anyone with information is asked to contact the Selkirk RCMP or Crime Stoppers.
