Editor’s Note: Building the Future, One Foundation at a Time

Happy New Year to our readers across the Red River North, Eastline, and Boreal Boundary. As we move into the second week of 2026, the theme across our region is undeniably one of growth and infrastructure transition.

The most significant news for our southern commuters is the start of the Ste. Agathe Bridge (Louis Riel Bridge) daily closures. Beginning this week and continuing through February 13, the one-hour daily window from 9:30 AM to 10:30 AM marks a pivotal phase in the $48.6 million rehabilitation project. While the 60-minute closure may be a temporary hurdle for local traffic, it allows for the critical installation of structural steel that will eventually provide us with a wider, safer crossing complete with dedicated pedestrian pathways.

In the North Corridor, the Selkirk Lift Bridge (PR 204) is also preparing for a long-awaited transformation. The Province has confirmed that "Round 3" of the virtual public engagement will take place this month. We’ve learned that the preliminary design will fix the lift span in the down position permanently, addressing structural stability while preserving the iconic profile of this 90-year-old local landmark.

Looking further ahead, there is "early-stage optimism" for the Highway 59 Twinning project south of Île-des-Chênes. Minister Lisa Naylor has highlighted the corridor as a high priority in the 2026 Manitoba Multi-Year Infrastructure Plan. While construction timelines remain fluid, the inclusion of land acquisition and design funds in the 2026 capital talks signals a real commitment to supporting our region's rapid growth.

Finally, safety takes a front seat this month as the RM of Ste. Anne reviews the final designs for the PTH 12 and PR 210 intersection. With construction slated to begin later this year, the shift toward the "Restricted Crossing U-Turn" (RCUT) model represents a long-awaited victory for local advocates. By eliminating high-risk direct crossings, the province aims to dramatically reduce severe collisions at this notorious junction.

As you read through this week's update, please take a moment to look over the Municipal Deadlines Chart and the Community Events Table at the end of the newsletter. These sections are updated weekly to help you keep track of what is happening in your own backyard.

Finally, I’m excited to share that we officially hit 500 subscribers this week! It’s great to see so many people from across the region staying connected to our local news. If you’re enjoying the updates, please consider mentioning the newsletter to a neighbour or friend so they can join in, too.

Wishing you a safe, healthy, and productive start to 2026.
